5 Reasons We All Love The Security Guard Industry

I was talking to a customer this week who said that he could tell, despite me having more than my fair share of challenges, how much I loved owning a security guard company.  The truth is, he is absolutely right.  Starting that company was one of the best choices that I have ever made. Even after selling the company, although I could have chosen to do a hundred other things, I found myself drawn back into the security industry.  Since having that conversation I have found myself asking “Why do I love this industry so much?”  After giving it a fair bit of thought, I came up with these 5 reasons that I love the security guard industry:

1. The security guard industry matters: Despite the negative press that our beloved industry gets and how many times we hear stories about officers misbehaving, what we do matters.  There are not many professions outside of the military, medical professionals, and law enforcement that have such a profound impact on people’s lives. Whether it is the security officer who helped apprehend a criminal or one who helped saved someone’s life, what security officers do matters and I want to be a part of that.

2. I am making a difference:  Even though the security guard industry has been around in some form since people have had things to protect, I still feel like I have something to contribute.  I am proud to say that I provided my security guard clients with exceptional service and now I am providing security guard companies with resources to help them be more successful.  This industry may not be sexy, but what I’m doing has truly made a difference for my customers and colleagues.

3. I love an underdog: Like most people, I love rooting for the underdog and in the security guard industry we all probably feel like underdogs.  There are so many obstacles in the way of being successful, whether it’s the Affordable Care Act or elevated minimum wage rates, we continue to find ways to move forward and win.

“But even still, I don’t believe that the security guard industry has even come close to reaching its full potential.”

4. I love the potential of the industry:  For all of the negative publicity that we get, there are still some phenomenal people and organizations in the industry doing some great things.  But even still, I don’t believe that the security guard industry has even come close to reaching its full potential.  The excitement about the possibilities of what’s to come keeps me hooked.

5. We have a lot of great people:  Last but not least, I have had the chance to meet some extraordinary people.  In my current role at OfficerReports.com I talk to dozens of exceptional security professionals every month, some I am even lucky to have as customers.  But I have to give special acknowledgment to some individuals who have helped shape how I think about this industry. First is the late Robert “The Godfather” Digby who was a legend in the security industry in Chicago.  He led a great organization that gave new guys like me something to aspire to.  Speaking of great organizations, I have to mention the former management team at Titan Security Group.  Having a chance to see how they led their organization was inspirational.  David, Len, Rick “Thanks guys!”  Last but not least,  there is Murray Levine formerly of G4S.  Murray’s insight into where the industry has been, where it is going, and what it takes to be successful has been invaluable.  Although there are dozens of other people who I could name, I’ll leave it here.  Nonetheless thank you all!

Well, that’s why I love the security guard industry so much.  I hope that you enjoy working in this industry as much as I do and if so what do you love about it? Are you as passionate about it as I am?  Please feel free to share your thoughts below.
