How Do You Compare To Top Security Company Managers?

Although I loved the security guard company that my father and I built, I would never call it a top security company. But as part of my current position here at OfficerReports.com, I have had the opportunity to talk with dozens of companies that I would call top security guard companies.

Over the past four years, many of the owners and managers for these companies have shared some really incredible stories.  Most of the stories make you laugh and others just leave you shaking your head in disbelief.  Many of these stories gave me some insight into the type of owner or manager that the storytellers were.  After a while, I began to notice that there were some common traits that many of these top security company managers had in common.  In this blog I will share some of the common characteristics that I have found that these owners and managers have.  While you are reading through this list, ask yourself how do you compare?

Resilient

Managing a security guard company is a constant challenge.  Whether you’re dealing with uncooperative officers or demanding customers, you will always have more than your fair share of obstacles to overcome.   In dealing with these challenges, you will have to remember that they are just a natural part of having a security guard company.  Whatever the challenge, managers at top security companies have also faced and overcome these same challenges. So remember it’s not about the challenge itself, it’s about how you face and overcome it.

Confident

As stated above, being a security guard company owner comes with a lot of challenges. So to propel your company into the ranks of other top security companies, you have to be supremely confident in your ability to overcome any obstacle. That is especially true at times when the haters, naysayers, and even your closest friends are telling you to just give up.

Patient

Many security guard company owners start their companies with the idea of getting rich overnight, which I know from experience.  After all, I never made it back to that Rolls Royce dealership that I visited after starting my company.

The truth is that the first couple of years are going to be ugly, painful, and slow. Building a great team, developing your infrastructure, and finding the right clients takes years of hard work.  If you want to build a top security company it is going to be a long-term investment.

Passionate

If making a lot of money is your reason for owning a security guard company, stop now. Top security company managers are great at what they do because they love their jobs.  It’s the internal rewards that they receive from excelling at their jobs that sustains them, not the money. Love what you do and the money will come later.

Visionary

Many of the top security company managers have the uncanny ability to see an opportunity where others don’t.  Whether that is providing upscale security officers when billing rates are trending down, or investing in new technology when other companies won’t, they always have a way of separating themselves from the pack.

Use Technology

I recently had a conversation with a security company manager about the importance of efficiency. Top security companies know that throwing people at a problem, in most instances, is too inefficient.   Technology helps employees at top security companies accomplish more work in a shorter period of time. In other words, technology helps these companies do more with less.

Customer Focused

More so than any other trait, the top security companies and their managers are obsessed with providing great customer experiences. Everything that they do, from the way that they communicate with the customer, to the number of people the customer has to talk to to get something done, all focus on customer satisfaction.  They know that their success is all about their customers.

Although this not a comprehensive list, if you have all these traits you are well on your way to having a top security company.  But even if you don’t, becoming a great manager of a security company is something that you can grow into.  Check off the characteristics in this list that you possess and then get to work on cultivating the others.

What would you add to my list?  Did I miss any major traits? Please feel free to leave your comments below.
